Missouri Democratic Party Statement on Missouri GOP’s Doubling Down on Extreme Party Platform

May 8, 2024

This past weekend, the Missouri Republican Party held their State Convention, at which their signature deep dysfunction was on full display, and so much chaos ensued that they were unable to adopt a 2024 party platform. Instead, the Missouri Republican Party announced they have readopted the 2020 party platform currently in place, doubling down on their extreme, toxic agenda to strip rights away from Missouri families and push for more government interference in our everyday lives.

The 2024 Missouri GOP Platform, which Republican candidates across the state will run on this November, reaffirms the Party’s staunch support of Missouri’s current cruel abortion ban, which does not include any exceptions for rape or incest and jeopardizes certain contraceptive use, as well as their full support of a Missouri law that puts in vitro fertility treatments at risk.

“Neither the inability of the Missouri Republican Party to come together and pass a party platform nor the reaffirmation of their extremist crusade into our personal lives should be shocking to anyone paying attention,” said Dr. Robert Cesario, Vice-Chair of the Missouri Democratic Party’s 2024 Platform Committee. “Missouri Republicans have demonstrated their cruel commitment to attacking women’s reproductive rights even after a near-total abortion ban went into effect following Trump’s Supreme Court’s ruling to overturn Roe vs. Wade, and that they are unable to properly function as a governing body.”

“This legislative session, the GOP supermajorities in the state house and senate have only managed to send a handful of bills to Governor Parson’s desk, one of which would defund an essential healthcare services provider that does not perform abortions in our state. Missourians are sick of this kind of cruel dysfunction and will be sending a strong message to get out of our lives and get to work this November.”

The Guardian: Republican Josh Hawley’s Anti-Abortion Arguments Echoed In Alabama IVF Case

“Anti-abortion arguments made in the recent controversial Alabama supreme court decision, which led to the shut down of in vitro fertilization (IVF) in nearly half of the state’s clinics, echo those made by the Republican US senator Josh Hawley.

The Missouri lawmaker made similar arguments in 2013 and when he worked on the legal team arguing the ‘Hobby Lobby’ case on contraception before the US Supreme Court.”
