Missouri Democratic Party Applauds MO Supreme Court For Right Decision To Keep Amendment 3 On Ballot

September 10, 2024

Friday night, Judge Limbaugh of the Cole County District Court issued a decision that would remove Amendment 3, the ballot measure to end Missouri’s cruel, near-total abortion ban from the November ballot And then Secretary of State Ashcroft decertified the measure. Sunday night, the ballot measure campaign, Missourians for Constitutional Freedom filed an emergency appeal to challenge this ruling. Today, the Missouri Supreme Court heard oral arguments from both sides- the same day ballots are due to be printed and rightfully ruled Amendment 3 will be on Missourians’ ballots this November.

“After the far-right wing Supreme Court justices cast the deciding votes to overturn Roe, Missouri was the first state to make every abortion illegal, due to a Republican trigger law. Since that day in June 2022, we have heard countless horrific stories of pregnant women across the country denied lifesaving care and doctors threatened with prosecution for doing their jobs,” Secretary of State Candidate Barbara Phifer said.

“We have watched Missouri Republicans fight for years to undermine Missouri voters and even outright ignore our ballots cast on issues they oppose. This time, they came for a petition signed by nearly 380,000 Missouri voters to restore life-saving rights to care and keep Amendment 3 off of our ballot this November. While we are grateful for this just ruling, we must understand our task is not complete until we pass Amendment 3 and elect Democrats up and down the ballot to protect our rights from this kind of political interference. Missouri Republicans have a well-established pattern to undermine or completely ignore the will of Missouri voters and they will pay for that gross overreach in November.”

Additionally, the Missouri Democratic Party will be providing logistical support and space for a morning gathering to celebrate this ruling, as well as to provide a regional volunteer information and a sign-up site at Shaw Park in Clayton
