#TBT: Josh Hawley Blames Sexual Revolution for Sex Trafficking

COLUMBIA, Mo. — On International Women’s Day, a reminder that Josh Hawley believes the women’s liberation movement is to blame for sex trafficking. In a speech to the Missouri Renewal Project in December, Hawley blamed sex trafficking on the cultural shift in the 1960s and 1970s that led to the destigmatization of things like contraception in American society. Kimberly Mehlman-Orozco, a human-trafficking expert, said there is “absolutely no empirical evidence or research to suggest there was any uptick in human trafficking in the 1960s or ’70s, or that that’s when it started.”

“Josh Hawley’s comments on sex trafficking show both ignorance on the origins of a critical issue and distain for the progress that women have made toward gaining equal rights.”

Missouri Democratic Deputy Communications Director Brooke Goren.
