Hawley Still Won’t Denounce Trump’s Tariffs

COLUMBIA, Mo. — One month after President Trump announced tariffs that Republican Senator Ben Sasse says will “light American agriculture on fire,” Josh Hawley continues to stand behind the tariffs. Even after Trump yesterday acknowledged that Missouri farmers will be hurt by the tariffs, Hawley offered only meaningless platitudes and continued to praise the Trump administration’s handling of the tariffs.

The Missouri Farm Bureau and everyday Missouri farmers have repeatedly voiced their concern over the tariffs, calling them a “big concern” given that “Missouri products are getting hammered.” To date, Trump’s tariffs have sparked billions of dollars in Chinese retaliatory taxes on American agricultural products, including major Missouri products such as soybeans and pork.

“It is truly unbelievable that Josh Hawley is continuing to back the tariffs, even as senators from both parties and Missouri farmers have come together to sound the alarm about the effect these tariffs will have on our agriculture. Missouri farmers need someone they can trust to stand up for them — it’s clear Josh Hawley is not that person.”
