Kansas City, Mo. (April 3, 2019) – Today, the Missouri Democratic Party called upon Missouri Attorney General Eric Schmitt to oppose the legal effort to invalidate the Affordable Care Act’s protection of insurance coverage for people with pre-existing health conditions. Since being appointed Attorney General, Eric Schmitt has been silent on his office’s position on the Texas lawsuit invalidating the Affordable Care Act. The Trump administration has said they will not appeal the ruling, which involved a lawsuit that previous Missouri Attorney General Josh Hawley joined. This week, the Republican Attorneys General of Montana and Ohio filed arguments opposing the ruling.
Executive Director Lauren Gepford made the following statement:
“Now that even Republican Attorneys General have stepped forward to argue in favor of an appeal that would protect coverage for people with pre-existing conditions, Eric Schmitt owes the citizens of Missouri an answer on where he intends to direct his office’s energy on this critically important issue. Rather than continue with the legal position of his predecessor, Schmitt can and should chart a new course. Missouri’s Attorney General works for Missourians, not the Trump Administration. Schmitt should do the right thing and join his Republican colleagues in supporting the preservation of health insurance coverage for Missouri families.”
