MDP Statement on Special Session Announcement

JEFFERSON CITY, Mo. – Missouri Democratic Party Chair Stephen Webber released the following statement on the announcement that Governor Eric Greitens is holding a special legislative session:

“After spending the session bickering with each other and failing on big issues like ethics reform and the opioid epidemic, Missourians are now footing the bill so the dysfunction of Eric Greitens and Republicans in Jefferson City can go into overtime.”

A number of reports and analyses this week have highlighted how Eric Greitens failed on his biggest campaign promise to deliver on ethics reform:

  • The Kansas City Star said “Eric Greitens’ first session” was  “undercut by ethics questions.”
  • Leader Publications recently criticized Eric Greitens for failing on ethics reform: “So, the question has been narrowed to two possibilities – has the swamp claimed another former white knight, or was he just another self-promoting schmuck in white knight clothing?”
  • St. Louis Public Radio reported that “Greitens’ relationship with the legislature could use some repair.”
